February: Raising Awareness

Writer: Anya HansonAnya Hanson

Happy March! It’s a new month with more opportunities to get more involved at school, in your neighborhood, and community! Let’s go over what has been going on at PILT for the past short month and we have planned next.

We have a big announcement to make: Aya is now an ExCo member with the position of Associate Director of Outreach. She will work with Minori to update our school and club outreach spreadsheets with the contact information of all schools in San Diego County to reach out and engage our peers in supporting our community. We’re hoping to get some students interested and have them host projects at their school in support of our partner organizations.

At Albert Einstein Academy Charter Middle School, Arturo, Eden, and Keila have a sale planned with profits going to restocking YMCA HOY’s hygiene cabinet. Sophie, who worked all on her own on organizing a donation drive and getting word out about it at Helix Charter High, will be supporting YMCA’s HOY program as well.

At AEA’s Elementary School, Josephine and Minori presented about the importance of community and how students can help on campus. Students were engaged and asked insightful questions, while teachers worked around their busy schedules to incorporate PILT’s presentation into their students’ day. Josephine will continue presenting but to a different audience — her fellow Girl Scout members later this month.

Anya has been working with her peers at East Village Middle College High School to organize a sale selling lemonade and pizza. With friends, she hung up posters and decided to do a presale last Thursday through to this Wednesday, with food delivery on Thursday.

San Diego High School’s Community Outreach has been working tirelessly to do multiple things, like their group projects and club activities to support their local community. Mara and Alejandro purchased first aid care kit items from the $81 of profits of their pizza sale, then packaged and donated them to StandUp for Kids, with Ms. Burg generously picking them up from SDHS’s campus. Aya and Minori made hygiene kits for SUFK San Diego as well, coinciding the donation  with the items from their toy drive. Minori and her mom also purchased granola bars with the club’s proceeds for PATH and dropped them off at PATH’s downtown location, Connections. Additionally, Community Outreach had a pizza sale with concessions such as chips and soda, and made $100 in profits for their hoodies. Shekoda, Olivia, and Minori came up with a design that they can individually create on plain hoodies during a meeting. It will be an opportunity to do something creative and exciting, while raising awareness about their club!

Community Outreach Club has a clothing cabinet organizing event planned on April 3rd and a dinner service at PATH Connections coming up on May 2nd. The services will provide an opportunity to see what can be done when working hands-on with PATH’s clients and will act as an end-of-the-year and congratulatory party for our seniors graduating. We also have drives set up for the last few months of this semester, along with our usual sales.

We also received a wonderful project opportunity from Ms. Virginia, an intern at PATH, asking if PILT wants to participate in a community wall project, where we will decorate and write kind messages on red paper, spelling out the letters of PATH. Arturo's team and Minori’s team are both participating, with Community Outreach planning to make them on Friday.

Our social media has been very active, with a pizza sale post, StandUp for Kids post, a clothing drop-off post for Nicolo, Olivia, and Margaret’s clothing drive, a Valentine’s Day post, a pizza sale post, StandUp for Kids post, and presentations at AEACES post. Anya has also been keeping our website up-to-date so look around to see what you can do to support your community!

Thank you and keep an eye out for our next blog!
