As we enter October, San Diego suddenly becomes chiller and with it, the more our neighbors suffer. Due to a lack of heavy clothing and shelter, these times become more difficult and warm meals become fewer. To support our vulnerable community members, PILT has begun setting up drives at Albert Einstein Academy Charter Elementary School, Innovations Academy, and San Diego High School.
Sarah set up a food drive that went successfully and she received food donations that she’s planning a hand-distribution project on. Josephine’s drive began last Friday and she presented on student-involvement in our communities to her 4th grade class on Thursday. Mission Bay High School’s Outreach Club made care kits for PATH, which Arturo helped with. He’s also organized a dinner service at PATH Connections on December 20th for the whole club to see what a difference making a hot meal can make for people experiencing and transitioning out of homelessness. Community Outreach Club at San Diego High School had a bake sale with $91 in profits and a pizza sale with $140 in profits going towards care kits for Kids Outreach Initiative. The hygiene care kits will be assembled on November 7th in collaboration with Interact Club who will purchase the same amount of items in order to donate 100 care kits in total. Today, the club made “What Is Community To You?” drawings at their Halloween potluck meeting to donate to PATH like they did last year, but instead of a wall project, they will make them as hand-outs for PATH’s clients.
Another exciting milestone is the new technology committee that we’ve established! The members are Josephine, Nicolo, and Margaret, assisted by PATH volunteer and Josephine’s dad, Mr. Baur. They are reaching out to organizations/businesses for donations and are going to ask Helix seniors to donate their chromebooks to PATH after graduating. Nicolo has been working very hard on finding associations that could provide computers for PATH and Mr. Baur will be adding a page to donate to PILT on his company site. They also will take into consideration fundraising for the purchasing of Helix chromebooks.
Minori and Aya have officially finished fall outreach and already have some schools getting back to them. Many schools are interested in PILT and what we do. Minori plans to call them next week and hopes to get a few more emails of interest to plan projects for the upcoming semester.
For social media, Arturo has been reposting on both FaceBook and X. He has posted our September Blog, about SDHS’s pizza sale and bake sale, and on MBHS’s care kits for PATH.
Thank you for your hard work this month, PILTers.
